Good Luck at Unbound and Wilmington
Success looks like a lot of things and can be achieved even on bad days and with adversity. The race story is why we do it. The race story is rarely glamorous and is NEVER flawless.
My 2011 Leadville 100 ended well but it felt like a disaster in the moment. I got tangled in my feedbag, fell and cut myself badly. I lost the group I was in with 60 miles still to go. After months of training I screwed up in front of hundreds of people (the feed zone is massive). It was embarrassing, painful and it was bloody! I regrouped and decided the cut while deep would likely stop bleeding so I got back up and after a few miles of climbing, refocused on my plan and what I could control. I resumed fueling and pacing and caught some of the group I had lost. In the end, I finished with a ‘gold belt buckle’. It was slower than I trained for, but still with a ‘Canadian Record’ that stood until this past year.
I share this story & photo only to remind you that what you are doing is an adventure and that during the race things can seem horrible. Regardless of how it goes and the time or whether you finish, these are good stories, and more experience to add to your ‘fitness for the task’. (e.g. I have since been more patient when feeding!)
These giant races are a challenge to train for with our busy lives - you have already succeeded and accumulated experience over these last months and years.
Embrace the moments during and wait to assess and judge the story after. Stay focused on ‘WHAT IS NEXT’ and your plan this week and through the race. Be cautious with last minute changes, the Expo/registration area and ‘pre-race chatter’.
