WHERE IS YOUR COMMUNITY?
Hello, hello!
Lately, Peter and I have been talking a lot about the pillars of being a Consummate Athlete, and one that we really, really stress constantly is the idea of community. It's why we started the podcast and why we love hosting talks, camps and clinics.
I just hosted a webinar with Ontario Cycling where I brought in 6 women to chat about how they got into cycling and what's kept them in. And in a word, it was community. Finding it, building it if needed, nurturing it, and bringing others into their sport made a big difference to their enthusiasm for riding. I know a lot of people have struggled in the last year with feeling a big lack of community, and I know some places (like here in Ontario), group rides are still not a thing. But that doesn't mean you can't find an online community or investigate options for when things do restart or reach out to former riding or running buddies even for a virtual meetup! A couple of us on the panel talked about being introverts, and how the idea of reaching out is always a little hard for us, but we're always glad we did it in the end.
So, your challenge for the week: Think about who your community is, where they are, and take a step towards reaching out if you haven't been lately!
(Psst... for some actual ideas on starting/finding a community, watch the whole webinar here!)
Now, one final caveat: this doesn't mean every ride has to be—or should be!—a group ride. Solo training is super important as well!
As always, thanks for being part of our crew—hope you have an active, healthy week!!
