Your Athlete Identity, Unpacked | Consummate Athlete Newsletter
THE CONSUMMATE ATHLETE NEWSLETTER...
Live a healthy, adventurous life
Hellooooooo!
These past few months have been a little weird for everyone, to say the least, and a lot of people we know have gotten into a serious routine, ourselves included... So much so that we were feeling pretty darn stuck, especially for people who normally spend summer on the road. Luckily, we were able to channel some Consummate Athlete principles and we decided that since we weren't racing anytime soon, we had the ability to get out for a camping and hiking trip instead. We headed to a nearby provincial park for a long weekend of hiking (yes, with our mini-dachshund!) and had a total blast... Big thanks to our recent guest Sara for sharing some hiking and backpacking tips, including how to not 'pack your fears'! (That episode: Hiking and Backpacking – Sara Quackenbush)
Also: CROSS IS COMING (at least, sort of). Which means, we're starting to book small group/individual cyclocross clinics for fall! Peter has been busy with bike skills sessions and plenty of coaching -- this is the perfect time to really work on weak points and get yourself ready for next season.
OK, onto what we've been into these last two weeks...
Stay safe,
Molly + Peter
BE THE ATHLETE YOU WANT TO BE
We've talked a lot about athlete identity and what it means for different people lately, and we have a couple pieces up right now for anyone struggling to feel like an athlete with no races on the calendar. The simplest way is to use a hard or long workout to gameplay for an eventual race day and get into the zone/groove! But Molly also chatted with sports psychs, Olympians and masters athletes about how they're making this time work for them:
GOING UP
Vert/elevation/ascent: Basically, focusing on something other than just logging big miles might help get you out of a rut. We're talking about why some people are opting to add vertical gain—either for their own fun or for challenges like the one the Leadville Race Series is hosting—and how to make that happen without wrecking yourself:
