Making More Time for Spontaneous FUN! | The Outdoor Edit Newsletter
THE OUTDOOR EDIT NEWSLETTER
Hellooooooo!
Our friend Eric called us last Wednesday and asked if we wanted to do a 3-day 80 kilometer fast-pack in Algonquin Provincial Park. "Absolutely not," I told him. "We have no time." Then, I thought about it, and realized if I couldn't make time for a trip that would have been Friday late afternoon through Sunday afternoon (so really, only 48 hours away) on a weekend that we theoretically had free, then I really hadn't set my life up in the way I thought I had. So I texted back, "Just kidding, we're in." And it was THE BEST decision. I know not everyone can drop everything for a weekend like that, but consider this your reminder to be OK saying yes to things that sound spontaneously wonderful. Maybe it's a 15 minute chat on the phone with an old friend, maybe it's a surprise weekend excursion. But we should make space for these random moments of amazing!
But enough about me! Let's talk about what's happening lately...
XO,
Molly
HIKING + CAMPING IN THE COLD
OK, so we went camping and hiking and it was magical and wonderful but it was also f-ing COLD. Like, wake up to frost cold. And I'm not a winter camper (or a camper at all honestly). Major learning? If you can keep your feet happy and warm, you'll be happier and warmer. I did not totally crush it on that count but I am READY for next time! DIALING BACK TO GO HARDER
I interviewed Maghalie Rochette for the Shred-Girls.com site but I thought everyone here could benefit from what she had to say about why she stopped racing MTB and cyclocross nearly year-round. It's easy to get caught up in race-race-race mentality, but the true elites out there pick and choose more thoughtfully: "I’ve been playing in both disciplines for a while and I felt like I had a hard time at being 100% always. I felt like I was always at 90%. So I decided I wanted to see how good I could be if I put everything into cyclocross. I didn’t want to have that—it wasn’t an excuse because it was real—but I didn’t want to have the excuse that I was tired because I was racing. I wanted to be 100% responsible for what happened to me. I wanted to be fully committed, and if I failed, it wouldn’t be because I was tired or because I was racing too much."
