Happy Running, The Perfect Trainer Setup + More! | The Outdoor Edit Newsletter
THE OUTDOOR EDIT NEWSLETTER
Hellooooooo!
The second (out of four) training camps I'm coaching this season just ended, and I have to admit—I'm a lot sadder than I thought I would be. This one was longer—14 days—and I realized that that was just the right amount of time for me to get into a routine with the city of Girona, our daily schedule, and the riders themselves. I got used to the volume (of riding/of the athletes) and when it was gone, these past few days have felt a little too quiet...
So, of course, I'm excited that this week, I head to Tucson to help coach another week of ENCXQuest with 12 rad young women. And the countdown is on—almost 2 months until Shred Girls: Lindsay's Joyride is out and I am FREAKING OUT.
But enough about me. Let's talk what's interesting/fun/noteworthy week.
XO,
Molly
PS: As always, we're on the lookout for more questions for our training and nutrition Q&A episodes of The Consummate Athlete Podcast! Respond here with any questions: there's no question too general OR too specific!
COUPLES TRAINING
Not always easy, and while I want to say "but it's always worth it," that's just not the case. In the latest Q&A on The Consummate Athlete Podcast, Peter and I talk all about how to train together when you're not at the same fitness level. It's a sometimes-challenging, sometimes-frustrating one, and I'm going to say that this is the most personal we've gotten in an episode ever! BEING A HOSTED ATHLETE
I wrote all about being an athlete host a few weeks ago, and here's the other side of it: How to be a good hosted athlete! For example: Before you arrive, tell your host as many arrival details as you can [ETA, how many bikes you’re bringing, departure date…]. If you have any specific needs or dietary restrictions, tell them ahead of time. It’s almost always fine, but I’ve seen host families get a bit grumpy when they’ve made a great family-style dinner only to be told that one team member doesn’t eat gluten, another doesn’t eat meat, et cetera.
INDOOR TRAINING: THE WORST, BUT MAKE IT SUCK LESS
Over at Bicycling, I wrote a piece about the gear that can make an indoor trainer setup the most optimal... My personal favorite thing (that I've used over the years) is a music stand to balance your phone/iPad/whatever on while you pedal, rather than getting one of the weird handlebar attachments or setting up something sketchy on a table. If you're like us and have a small apartment, I also personally LOVE a privacy screen to block your setup from wrecking the flow/vibe of your living room (and this one is super well-reviewed and on sale!)
THAT SHRED GIRLS BOOK
Let's be honest, I'm going to talk about this every week, so apologies if you're reading this for the billionth time... But if you pre-order Lindsay's Joyride (out May 7!), email me the receipt and I'll send you a signed Shred Girls postcard + Shred Girls bike frame stickers... and if you share it with a friend, let me know and I'll send you even more stickers!!
MARCH ATHLETIC BOOKWORMS
Let's all be happier! This month's read is The Happy Runner by David and Megan Roche (you may have heard our episode with David on the podcast, it's one of my favorites EVER.) The book is a great, easy read that will make you feel a whole lot more posi about running or whatever sport you're doing!

"Shred Girls: Lindsay's Joyride" is an empowering new series from the cyclist who runs Shred-Girls.com is guaranteed to give readers an adrenaline rush--and the confidence girls gain from participating in sports. It's time to ride and save the day!
Lindsay can't wait to spend her summer break reading comics and watching superhero movies--until she finds out she'll be moving in with her weird older cousin Phoebe instead. And Phoebe has big plans for Lindsay: a BMX class at her bike park with cool-girl Jen and perfectionist Ali. Lindsay's summer of learning awesome BMX tricks with new friends and a new bike turns out to be more epic than any comic book--and it's all leading up to a jumping competition. But some of the biker boys don't think girls should be allowed to compete in BMX. Now it's up to Lindsay, Jen, and Ali to win the competition and prove that anyone can be great at BMX.
