THE OUTDOOR EDIT NEWSLETTER
Hellooooooo!
OK, endurance cycling camp is over and we have our lives back — and honestly, I am feeling the fatigue hard now that it's been a few days. But when you're not actually a pro racer — like 99% of us! — you don't really get a bunch of chill days to recover with your legs up on the couch chilling and streaming Netflix. (Actually, real talk, every pro athlete I know works his or her ass off hustling when off the bike, so really, no one gets that much time off after a hard block!)
But what I am trying to do is make sure my nutrition is super good — loads of veggies, tons of protein right now — and getting a solid 8 hours of sleep every night. And, like my coach recommended, I am slothing as much as possible when not training, which, since I work from home, does mean trying to keep my legs up while I write this.
How do you recover from a hard week of training while still existing in real life? Let me know your secrets!!
...OK, let's dive into what I'm digging this week.
XO,
Molly
PS: Just a reminder, If you pre-order Shred Girls, email me the receipt and I'll send you a signed Shred Girls postcard + Shred Girls bike frame stickers!
NUTRITION, BIKE RACING AND BALANCE WITH LORI NEDESCU
I am obsessed with Lori Nedescu, aka Hungry For Results (and formerly Cadence Kitchen). She's an IG superstar, a registered dietician, a pro cyclist and SO MUCH FUN to chat with. So, of course, we had to have her on the podcast. There is so much gold in this episode, you have to give it a listen: Performance + Nutrition with Lori Nedescu,RDN
BEST CHEAP TRAVEL TIPS
I wrote a VERY LONG, VERY DETAILED article about how we save $$$ whether we're flying or driving, doing a quick stop or a month-long stay. Personal fave: The oldie-but-goodie of drink or eat out, but don't do both. When we’re on the road, we almost never go out to eat and drink in the same night. We’ll go out for a drink, then cook at home/in the hotel/in the van, or go out for a meal, then come home and crack a bottle of wine. This weird shift has saved us a $hitload of money over the last couple years. (This is also where the food box with a wine opener and our two plastic tumblers comes in handy—makes for much classier imbibing at a campsite!) Read the whole list here.
THE MERINO SWEATSHIRT
Practical, stylish, sweat-wicking, smell-repellent, travel-friendly... all ways I describe merino wool hoodies and why they are an athlete's best friend. I've tried A LOT of options over the years and did a definitive roundup of my personal favorites. Cannot recommend enough as a wardrobe staple.
YOUR MAKEOVER MONTAGE
I waffle on New Year's stuff. I love the #newyearnewme thing while at the same time, acknowledging that it is 110% cheesy and kind of ridiculous. But sometimes, a makeover montage is what I need, even if it's only in my head. Am I the only one who has a music video of a (really boring) montage running through her head at all times? (Maybe this is why my hair keeps getting shorter and shorter, tbh.)
SPRING TRAINING
If you're feeling motivated but unsure of what to actually do with that motivation, let's talk about it! I'm open for consults on training, nutrition + happy riding, so if you don't quite need a coach but need a bit of direction or a kick in the ass, check it out!
